Azurebumble :: ‘Urban Texts’ Series (urban photography)

::

Currently there are major redevelopments occurring on the riverside in Dundee in

preparation for the new V&A Museum. This selection of photographs captures some

of the texts and surfaces from the numerous boards that now loosely define this area…

Klein returned to still photography in the 1980’s, ever progressive and unrelenting in his approach. Revisiting his work to that date, he made large-scale blow-ups of his photographic contact sheets, revealing on an unparalleled scale the frames before and after the decisive image. Liberally applying gloss brush strokes in bold colours to these mural-sized prints, Klein brought together key elements from his long career: graphic form, composition and colour from the early murals and paintings juxtaposed with ground-breaking fashion and street photos, along with the narrative and bold visual language of his experimental films. A defining moment where his unique vision came full circle. – Extract

Hiroyasu Matsui : “Cubes” Series (Photo Constructions)

::

What exactly is a photograph?

… In choosing film as my medium for artistic expression I thought I must first understand and assess its essence and characteristics. At the same time I wanted to avoid perceiving my subjects through conventional values and interpretations, which is why I needed to create a suprematistic image. [ AS ]

I try to express contradicting elements such as photo and graphic; planar and three-dimensional; static and dynamic. Instead of expressing an image by photographing a particular subject, I perceived it as a two-dimensional art form consisting of light, thereby creating an image using the light from the lightbox.

Execution

Photographed cardboard cubes.
Uploaded to computer and fixed the density.
Printed outline on black paper and created masks.
Exposed while peeling off the masks on the light box in sequence.
