Award-winning Magnum photographer, Chang Chien-Chi, showcased a series of his most extensive photography works in the exhibition entitled Doubleness: Photography by Chang Chien-Chi. The exhibition featured 130 photographs, 3 videos and 2 video projections. The intense and realistic images not only highlighted contemporary societal issues in Asia such as arranged marriages and immigrant culture, but also explored complex issues of love and alienation, hope and darkness as well as freedom and restriction. It was the first time that all three works, The Chain, Double Happiness and China Town, were exhibited together, whilst Double Happiness and China Town were edited and presented in the form of videos. Tàpies shared a general sensibility which affected artists on both sides of the Atlantic after the Second World War and the dropping of the atomic bomb, and soon expressed an interest in matter – earth, dust, atoms and particles – which took the shape of the use of materials foreign to academic artistic expression and experiments with new techniques. He believes that the notion of matter must also be understood from the point of view of Medieval mysticism as magic, mimesis and alchemy. That is how we must see his wish for his works to have the power to transform our inner selves.

The works of the last years are, most of all, a reflection on pain – both physical and spiritual – understood as an integral part of life. Influenced by Buddhist thought, Tàpies believes that a better knowledge of pain allows us to soften its effects and therefore improve our quality of life. The passage of time, which has always been a constant in his work, now takes on fresh nuances when lived as a personal experience which brings greater self-knowledge and a clearer understanding of the world.

He’s consolidated an artistic language which visually conveys both his conception of art and certain philosophical concerns which have been renewed over the years. His practice is still open to the brutality of the present while offering a form which, despite its ductility, remains faithful to its origins. So the works of the last few years aren’t only fully contemporary, they’re also a record of his own past.

Jordan Tull explores the exchange between artwork, site, and viewer through sculpture and installation. Tull has produced site-specific sculpture responding to architectural settings throughout Portland, OR. His object-based sculptures explore structural and perceptual phenomenon through geometric abstraction and allusive metaphor. Tull’s current work advances for the development of new spatial languages experienced within the context of contemporary architecture and sculptural discourse. Through technology, collaboration and experimentation Tull creates radical asymmetries, ordering systems and dynamic geometric progressions as applied to site-specific contexts and computer-generated models. Tull’s works aim to establish an alternative perceptual approach to spatial applications through the employment of computer-aided fabrication technology and space manipulation.

The work of Alexis Cladière (36recyclab) incorporates architecture, design and engineering as well as sculpture, graphic arts and skateboards culture. He builds everything himself from 3D structures, photos, fonts and logos to large scale street exhibitions of tape cutting and 3D modelling. His style has become synonymous with clean, contemporary architectural design and structured visceral compositions, which use the interplay between angles and solidity to create fresh perspectives. “These posters you see in the streets of Paris (Bastille-Gare De Lyon) are urban grafts that represent an architecture project of mine, started in 2004 called ‘PARASIT’: it’s an independent structure which is fixed on a building, that lives due to an existent apparatus and lives off of it’s resources (water, electricity, gas, communication networks).

The little part is the inside apartment, the biggest part outside, in front of the building, and it houses the tubes and piping that it feeds off of. I made 3D models of ‘PARASIT’ recently and put them in the streets, completely assembled. Passers by seemed to think that they were machines, photocopiers or survelliance cameras. That is the brilliance of art….People see what they want to see.” Alexis Cladière

Born in 1974 in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, Yoichiro Kamei is one of the most appreciated young ceramic artists. With more than 10 solo exhibitions had in the past ten years – in Kyoto, Tokyo, Aichi, Osaka and Faenza, he was awarded Merit Prize at the 1st Taiwan International Ceramics Biennale in 2004. In 2010 he received the Kyoto City Artist Prize, which is one of the most valuable Japanese art awards.

They explore the limits of two-dimensionality, and articulate a radically different perspective on a commonplace visual scenario.
