Robert Adams was born in New Jersey in 1937. He was a professor of English literature for several years before turning his full attention to photography in the mid 1970s. His work is largely concerned with moments of regional transition: the suburbanization of Denver, a changing Los Angeles of the 1970s and 1980s, and the clear-cutting in Oregon in the 1990s. His many books, well-known to those concerned with the American Landscape, include The New West, From the Missouri West, Summer Nights, Los Angeles Spring, To Make It Home, Listening to the River, West From the Columbia, What We Bought, Notes for Friends, California, Summer Nights, Walking, What Can We Believe Where? and The Place We Live. One may find the concepts explored in Ward Roberts’ Billions series confronting, given that the images within this series represent a fast-forming reality, predicted to be the dystopian future not so long ago. But the present is never perceived as the future we envisaged in the past. We move along the arrrow of time as stationary observers, watching the world transform before our very eyes, yet rarely aware of our transition into ‘the future’.

Billions removes us from this stationary reality for a brief moment, lifting us to the surface for air. From this detached place, these images allow us to see our world, yet we feel neither comfortable nor uncomfortable about it. We find the challenges of cognitive mapping, the loss of individualism, that theorists like Fredric Jameson were concerned with. But we seem not to feel alarm.

Perhaps we have evolved along with our ideas, with our effects on the world and its dynamic entropy. Our minds have unconsciously integrated what was, through past eyes, a forecast of chaos. In our times, the concept of a billion no longer overwhelms us. As these photographs show us, we can stay solid and identify connectedness between floating transparencies. We now recognize a new kind of whole. It’s work that allows you to recognize your world and your place within it that is truly effective. x

For the past ten years, Ronan Guillou has undertaken a broad personal photographic investigation, suggesting a vision of the complexity of the dialogue between the protagonists of urban life. It was in the process of his numerous expeditions on different continents that this research became clearer, before he made the United States his primary source of documentation. Difficult to classify, Ronan Guillou’s work is somewhere in between documentary photography and plastic photography; where in just a few years, the artist compiled a considerable body of work that he only began showing in 2005.

If his photographs suggest a poetic vision of the ordinary and call upon the imagination of each and every one of us, they also question us on the temporality [material matter] of places, reveal their nearly organic power as well as their fragility, and examine man’s relationship with the constructed universe. The use of a medium-sized format allows the artist to give priority to immediate contact with his subject while remaining in touch with the elements outside of the frame.

Color is also at the heart of the production process as the decisive material of the formal approach; if in fact it makes it possible to reveal the geometrical force of spaces and the poetic dimension of certain scenes, it tends to pay tribute to traditional American iconography as well. Steven B. Smith is a photographer whose work chronicles the transition of the dramatic and formidable Western landscape into a kind of tamed and caged suburbia. The photographs depict what has become derisively referred to as suburban sprawl, but they also reveal conflicted feelings about development in the West in general. Many are simultaneously funny and bleak, a byproduct perhaps of his affection for and identification with the area.
