Henry Wessel :: ‘New Topographics’ (Photography)

::

“You’re suddenly seeing the coherence and interconnectedness of everything, left to right, bottom to top, front to back. It’s all connected, and somehow, it’s all in balance. And that’s, when you go ‘Yes!’” H Wessel

Henry Wessel first gained recognition in the 1970s as part of the New Topographics, a group of photographers who challenged the conventions of documentary and landscape photography, capturing instead the poetry of seemingly mundane scenes and subjects—traffic lights, advertisements, empty landscapes, and suburbia. During the 1970s he moved to San Francisco from New York after falling in love with the brilliant quality of light in California. There, in both black-and-white and color film, he photographed the vernacular architecture and social landscape of his surroundings, in prints with long shadows and rich tonal variations… [Extract]

Brandt Campbell : “Cinemascapes” Series (Photography)

::

My ‘Cinemascapes’ are an ongoing series of [mostly] street photos shot in such a way that they
appear cinematic and invoke a sense of narrative, which is open to the viewer’s interpretation.

I took an interest in the arts at a very early age, beginning to draw as soon as I could hold a crayon. By the time I entered high school I had already earned a reputation with students and teachers for my ability to draw with photographic precision. From there, my artistic career evolved and branched off in many directions. Aside from a class I took about camera functions and darkroom basics, I lack any formal training and am entirely self-taught. My inspiration comes from all kinds of things, and changes with the seasons. I draw from the aesthetics and moods of music, nature, film, paintings, weather, and people. I absolutely love art; I live and breathe art. If I couldn’t be creative anymore I truly believe I’d have lost my purpose in life, that purpose being to create beauty from inspiration and emotions. For anyone not familiar with this project here is the text that accompanied the original book release:

::

This book is the result of an online collaboration between 111 international artists and photographers, where by simply utilising the infrastructure of the photo sharing website ‘flickr’ we have managed to communicate, interact and gather together a stunning collection of over 400 abstract and aesthetic photographic works!

For this project I have reorganised a series of virtual online curations toward interconnected progressions of sensual, thought provoking and emotive works. Selected carefully each double-page spread features a self-contained visual duet…these pairings are also integral to the flow of the sequence as a whole. This continuity allows the viewer to visit any page at will and embark on an intriguing journey into a complex and ethereal world of delicate changing moods.

A space involving unexpected movements of colour, shape and form, minimal tonal progressions with gentle transitions from dark to light and warm to cool, subtle textural, linear and conceptual relationships and occasional mysterious figurative apparitions. Ultimately inviting emotional responses via the poetic adventures of the imagination and the senses. (azurebumble)
