Azurebumble : ‘AI : Series’ (Photography Book)

::

::

Recently, I’ve curated a number of image series by photographers from ‘Flickr’ on my blog ‘Aesthetic Investigations’. Subsequently, I thought it would be interesting to document these works in a book. Therefore, i’ve arranged a collection of ’39’ abstract and minimal photographic series by these ’32’ artists. A selection of pages from the book can be viewed below, a full book preview can be seen: HERE

Thank you to everyone who contributed their images to this project.

For anyone not familiar with this project here is the text that accompanied the original book release:

::

This book is the result of an online collaboration between 111 international artists and photographers, where by simply utilising the infrastructure of the photo sharing website ‘flickr’ we have managed to communicate, interact and gather together a stunning collection of over 400 abstract and aesthetic photographic works!

For this project I have reorganised a series of virtual online curations toward interconnected progressions of sensual, thought provoking and emotive works. Selected carefully each double-page spread features a self-contained visual duet…these pairings are also integral to the flow of the sequence as a whole. This continuity allows the viewer to visit any page at will and embark on an intriguing journey into a complex and ethereal world of delicate changing moods.

A space involving unexpected movements of colour, shape and form, minimal tonal progressions with gentle transitions from dark to light and warm to cool, subtle textural, linear and conceptual relationships and occasional mysterious figurative apparitions. Ultimately inviting emotional responses via the poetic adventures of the imagination and the senses. (azurebumble)

The odor of sanctity can sometimes be a literal thing. The religiosity that hung in the air of Wolfgang Laib’s recent show was partly a product of iconography-shapes resembling sarcophagi, walls reminiscent of Egyptian temples, but it was also a synesthetic response to the scent of beeswax. The show consisted of just two architectural-scale works. High on the back wall of the main room was a pair of long, low, peak-roofed beeswax boxes. Each roughly the size and shape of a child’s coffin, they were held aloft by pairs of stubby wood beams that carried them the way an acolyte might bear a reliquary.

The power of Laib’s work, which might be described as Spiritual Minimalism, rests largely on the materials he chooses-such as milk, rice and pollen in addition to beeswax-substances suggestive of life’s essentials and of a kind of numinous purity. There is nothing extraneous, nothing unnecessary in Laib’s work. [extract : Art in America, June 1991, pp. 137-138, 1 June 1991 : Susan Tallman]

Benedict Campbell : Cyber Future

‘I am passionate about the image and therefore,

I will use every means available to me to create the image…’ Benedict Campbell

With 20+ years experience in advertising as a photographer and digital artist, Benedict Campbell has produced images for many of the worlds leading brands. He is renown for combining his skills as photographer and digital illustrator to create bold and often hyper-real images.

With Benedict’s creative origins very much grounded in photography, his use of computer generated imagery has been to enhance reality, rather than detract from it. By creating a ‘virtual studio’ on computer, Benedict is able to create sets that he can light, dress and manipulate in the same way that he can do with photography. Unlike photography however, this new media is boundless in its scope , pushing back the frontiers of perception while remaining accessible and reassuringly ‘organic’.

As a visual chameleon, Benedict is able to draw from a wide range of styles. From the muted and tonal simplicity of a well-lit photograph, to the lush, sensual gloss of a computer generated image, the end product is guaranteed to leave an imprint on the mind.[extract benedict campbell’s bio]
