The water’s edge has been a source of fascination for me since I can remember. The changing landscape, the effects of current and water volume, light, and temperature all make the river’s edge different from day to day. Seasonal progression brings further changes, with winter bringing the growing and changing veil of ice along the bank, increasing until the surface is solid. Even then, the ice changes in shape and transparency on a daily basis, thinning, clearing, cracking, buckling, melting and freezing again, and eventually moving tectonically downstream.

These highly abstract images seek to transcend boundaries of formal and scale recognition. Flowing lines and curved forms in the ice are interrupted by spiky, angular forms and layered textures. The seemingly random crystalline forms and structures evoke associations with landforms (aerial photography) and microcrystalline structures (photomicrography) and leave room for endless possibilities of interpretation. Therefore, as a photographer, they offer the opportunity to find and make strongly graphic yet highly detailed, rich images. [artist statement]

Brandon Lattu is a conceptualist who uses photography, sculpture, and digitally based imagery, Lattu has carefully labored over the most intricate details of his images to produce works that seduce with a deceptively simple and elegant beauty. At the same time these images resonate on an equally powerful sentient level. The manipulation, clarity, and overload of information in these images triggers the recognition that we can visually imagine a scene such as this but we will never see in this way. In “Miracle Mile”, Lattu utilizes the extent of photographic technology to produce a series of views looking West down the length of ‘Wilshire Boulevard’ between ‘La Brea’ and ‘Fairfax Avenues’ in Los Angeles.

Presented on a pure field of black, the only images depicted are the illuminated signs. Contrasting this black field of nothingness, each sign is presented in its accurate place and scale in relation to the section depicted. Perspective is eliminated and some signs appear backwards as one might see them while looking in a side view mirror from a car at night. With careful inspection the viewer becomes aware that commercial competition is investigated in this piece through the presence of stores directly across the street from one another. For example, on the north side of the street, Rite Aid, Staples and Blockbuster vie with Sav-on, Office Depot and Hollywood video on the south side offering essentially the same products. Here and throughout Lattu’s oeuvre, the instinctual attraction of sublime visual pleasure becomes inseparable from intellectual engagement. [Extract : Leo Koenig Inc – April 13, 2004]

The series of photographs “Latent Constructs” can be ordered within the tradition of abstract photography. This genre of photography deals with the basic principles of the medium itself: the play of light and shadow, the materiality of the paper, lens distortions, chromatic aberrations as well as visual traces of the aging process of the supporting material all play a role. Each photograph is the result of a complex production process in which the construction of a three dimensional material reality is transformed layer by layer into a unique single two dimensional image by means of many single exposures that are meshed together.

The original pictorial layers fade and become diffuse through repeated printings, while what was most recently photographed is in focus and has sharp contours. The image is therefore the result of artistic intervention combined with coincidence resulting from the production process. The work repeats within a linear timeline what is considered to be the most important means of identification of a photograph, the translation of space onto a surface. The images belonging to the photographic series “Latent Constructs” overcome the inherent logic of the photographic code, as they no longer imply a temporally singular referent. The photographed elements of the image become progressively encoded with each added step, thereby releasing them from their photographic symbolic character. [Extract : Portfolio]

Monotypes

Monotypes are one of a kind, unique prints. This work was made through applications of ink rolled and manipulated on the non absorbent surface of a Plexiglas plate. Damp paper was placed over the worked surface and with the help of a press, the impressions are pulled from onto the paper. Additional markings and sometimes patches of glued color amend the work after the paper has dried. This process allows me to address the formal concerns of both painting and drawing, and produces work with a remarkable transparent and “layered” quality that is not otherwise achieved.
