Azurebumble : ‘AI : Series’ (Photography Book)

Recently, I’ve curated a number of image series by photographers from ‘Flickr’ on my blog ‘Aesthetic Investigations’. Subsequently, I thought it would be interesting to document these works in a book. Therefore, i’ve arranged a collection of ’39’ abstract and minimal photographic series by these ’32’ artists. Osheen Harruthoonyan: ‘Black Garden’ Series (Photography)

“It’s easy to lose sight of exactly who you are while passing through the ‘Black Garden’. At the start, things are clear, there’s you and there’s the land, you each have your names and the division is simple.

Yet even from a peak within Nagorno-Karabakh you’re lost in the panorama. Mountain after mountain begets valley upon valley. A singular road runs through it all and though the end is too far to make out, you trust there’s an end. In your immediate vicinity at any given time you lose yourself in the intimacy of the trees, the overgrown foliage, the tombstones of an abandoned graveyard like fossilised crevices disintegrating in the wind. Voices buried beneath the moss, and cumulative silence, whisper about war.

There are small signs of life, a singular bird, a crucifix like a question mark that would cease to be seen if not for a blinking flame between the dripping walls of a crumbling cave. As night falls, shadows cannot be deciphered from leaves. Something floats by your eye, mouches volontes, a schism in the visual fabric, produced by your mind or the air, it does not matter. Your heart beats out what colour is left of the fading day and at once you are included and excluded from the landscape…” – Amy Pagnotta

Born in Persia and raised in Athens, Greece and Vancouver B.C., Osheen Harruthoonyan is a Toronto based photographer and filmmaker. Drawing upon his rich experiences living in such diverse cities, he employs a multi-faceted approach towards his artistic practice, investigating memory, history and the deconstructive process of time. Osheen’s work has been featured on Bravo! Arts Channel and his exhibitions in Toronto have consistently been noted as a top show not to miss. Harruthoonyan has also worked as a cinematographer on numerous short films, music videos, and experimental films.

Osheen Harruthoonyan’s sumptuous photographic prints evoke the uncertain, fledgling flashes encountered at the threshold of a dream. Combining traditional large-format photography with a variety of analog photo-manipulation techniques, Harruthoonyan skillfully renders his subjects within ethereally illusive environments. The fastidious striations and cracks of his altered film negatives become esoteric anomalies that hearken to a unique and singular “subterranean realm”.

Harruthoonyan’s willingness to take risks within the confines of the traditional photographic process makes this representational capacity possible. Altering each negative by hand, his works crystallize midway between the calculable and the spontaneous, addressing both the systematic and the chaotic. His careful yet playful inventiveness unravels the mysteries of our collective irreconcilable reverie. Harruthoonyan’s creations conjure the lifetimes that exist within moments, and the glimmers of strangeness that give pause to our ever-evolving subconscious states. What is the nude for me in 2011?

::

I did my first nudes of course, in university. I later studied life drawing in a practicum with a professor for drawing in Aachen and stayed on as studio assistant for 6 months. He was an artist who loved the female form and concentrated on the torso with emphasis on the breasts. Privately, he had done exquisite works on the female sexual parts, which I found his best. Really striking.

I started with torsos and moved on to nude portraits. Graphite on large paper was a combination of touch on the paper and the sight of the uncountable variations of shapes and shadows. This year I found that I had started with the quick, abstract nude sketches that I had started years ago and then I wanted to work with the camera. I started with macros and then into the fragmentary full body as well as ones with movement and overexposure.

But what it is for me, I still can’t answer completely. It is only the beginning of the search and exploration. What is the human form? Early Christianity created bodies that were representative of the spirit after the Greek concentration of the physical perfection. I loved those drawn-out ethereal figures and the embodiment of spirit in the flesh.

Later the saints, why were they all nude? The prostitutes and models of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the break-up of the surface by Picasso were new ways of seeing. The gorgeous, rotund beauties of Reubens and Rembrandt have been turned into gross flesh by such artists as Jenny Saville, or Lucien Freud. This is not a comprehensive statement on life painting or photography. But what is the nude for us now? Our over-abundance of perfection or pornography? What? [extract : the human form]

This book is the result of an online collaboration between 111 international artists and photographers, where by simply utilising the infrastructure of the photo sharing website ‘flickr’ we have managed to communicate, interact and gather together a stunning collection of over 400 abstract and aesthetic photographic works!

For this project I have reorganised a series of virtual online curations toward interconnected progressions of sensual, thought provoking and emotive works. Selected carefully each double-page spread features a self-contained visual duet…these pairings are also integral to the flow of the sequence as a whole. This continuity allows the viewer to visit any page at will and embark on an intriguing journey into a complex and ethereal world of delicate changing moods.

A space involving unexpected movements of colour, shape and form, minimal tonal progressions with gentle transitions from dark to light and warm to cool, subtle textural, linear and conceptual relationships and occasional mysterious figurative apparitions. Ultimately inviting emotional responses via the poetic adventures of the imagination and the senses. (azurebumble)

Since 1959 Bernd and Hilla Becher have been photographing industrial structures that exemplify modernist engineering, such as gas reservoirs and water towers. These works are often presented in groups of similar design; their repeated images make these everyday buildings seem strangely imposing and alien. Idris Khan’s Every… Bernd And Hilla Becher… series appropriates the Bechers’ imagery and compiles their collections into single super-images. In these pieces, multiple images are digitally layered and super-imposed giving the effect of an impressionistic drawing or blurred film still.

The structures in the Bechers’ original photographs are almost identical, though in Khan’s hands the images’ contrast and opacity is adjusted to ensure each layer can be seen and has presence. Though Khan works in mechanised media and his images are of industrial subjects, their effect is of a soft ethereal energy. They exude a transfixing spiritual quality in their densely compacted details and ghostly outlines. …conveying a sense of time depicted in motion, as if transporting the old buildings, in their obsolete black and white format, into the extreme future.

The Bechers took their photos as a means to document a disappearing tradition; by grouping them according to ‘typology’ the buildings’ designs function like archetypal symbols or an architectural language. Through Khan’s translucent aggregations, structures such as …Spherical Type Gasholders lose their commanding simplicity and rigid formalism and descend into fractured and gestural blurs. Through his photographs Khan compresses the timeline of repetition into indivisible subsuming moments and creates a poetic mutability from the fixed codes of history. [Extract : Saatchi Gallery]
