“A photograph isn’t necessarily a lie, but nor is it the truth. It’s more of a fleeting, subjective impression. What I most like about photography is the moment that you can’t anticipate: you have to be constantly watching for it, ready to welcome the unexpected.” – Martine Franck

Franck was born in Antwerp and spent her childhood in England and America, returning to Europe to study art history in Madrid and Paris. A trip to the Far East with friend Ariane Mnouchkine, the world-renowned theater director, sharpened her focus on photography. Starting out as a trainee at Time Life in 1963, Franck met and married legendary photographer and artist Henri Cartier-Bresson, later becoming one of a select few women with the influential Magnum Photos agency. She subsequently traveled extensively, photographing diverse and particular parts of the world’s population within their own milieu, all with an equal measure of respect and compassion. Curiosity Design Studio: Light-Light Installation

‘Light-Light’ is an installation made of 80 mini lights freely floating in the air.

The installation design is based on the idea of design freed from information, history and reference, a place of preserved time and apparent emptiness. Design is about communication, the challenge of ‘Light-Light’ is to create a connection with a minimum of means. This language should transcend age, culture, history and genre using technology but making it disappear, enclosed in a space that would ultimately vanish.

Light is a fantastic substance that we can imagine but not capture, it is opulence born from simplicity, an interplay of intellect and emotion. ‘Light-Light’ is a choreography of light performed by a ballet of free minds. ‘Light-Light’ is an expression of Japanese esthetic where the object is not of concern but the effect, the existence or non-existence itself is the main focus, the dialogue between reality and the perception of reality by human experience.

‘Light-Light’ gives the freedom to the visitor to be part of the installation as an actor, able to interact, play, brake and recreate. It projects“ your own desires and dreams into a vision where everything seems possible. ‘Light-Light’ is a place of discovery, each individual creates their own history when encountering the installation, from surprise to curiosity, from impact to intimacy. Light-Light’ is a design liberated from shape and materiality only the experience remains. [Extract : Curiosity, Tokyo Wonder]
