Ronan Guillou : Colour Photography ( Series 2 )

For the past ten years, Ronan Guillou has undertaken a broad personal photographic investigation, suggesting a vision of the complexity of the dialogue between the protagonists of urban life. It was in the process of his numerous expeditions on different continents that this research became clearer, before he made the United States his primary source of documentation. Difficult to classify, Ronan Guillou’s work is somewhere in between documentary photography and plastic photography; where in just a few years, the artist compiled a considerable body of work that he only began showing in 2005.

If his photographs suggest a poetic vision of the ordinary and call upon the imagination of each and every one of us, they also question us on the temporality [material matter] of places, reveal their nearly organic power as well as their fragility, and examine man’s relationship with the constructed universe. The use of a medium-sized format allows the artist to give priority to immediate contact with his subject while remaining in touch with the elements outside of the frame.

Color is also at the heart of the production process as the decisive material of the formal approach; if in fact it makes it possible to reveal the geometrical force of spaces and the poetic dimension of certain scenes, it tends to pay tribute to traditional American iconography as well. My pre-occupation as an artist is with creating highly distilled, contemplative nuances of feeling in print. I aim to compose images – drawn from nature and memory – of stark yet tactile forms, held momentarily out of balance; forms disappearing into immaterial shadows and configurations of form in spatial settings, undergoing transformation. I’m fascinated by forms appearing like projections onto surfaces, fragile and immaterial articulations, punctuated by the interplay of light and shade. Re-discovering delicate forms in space at distances defined by rhythm and structure, are of interest to me.

My objective is to create a state of suspension of individual elements, caught in a complex of layers with deceptive simplicity. The creation of these images is intuitive in nature. The creative process is ongoing, with every intuition, reflection and configuration, pre-figuring another possibility. The printing process is an integral part of my working process. The separation and building up of layers, multiple overprinting, the use of inks of differing viscosities – these modifications inform the work as it evolves. The artist Rachel Whiteread creates elegant and poetic sculptures which explore architecture, space, absence and memory. Often inspired by the physicality of the human body, her works are poignant for their exploration of intimate domestic spaces and household objects. Whiteread typically uses industrial materials such as plaster, resin and rubber to cast the negative space surrounding or within an object – the murky darkness beneath a bed frame, the void within a humble cardboard box, the space in and around a myriad collection of books. The resulting sculptures retain the texture and shape of the original objects, yet are eerie ghosts of their former selves.

Whiteread is perhaps best known for several large-scale public commissions such as House, a sculpture cast from the interior of a condemned Victorian house in London’ s East End, Water Tower, a resin cast of the water towers ubiquitous to the New York City skyline, Monument, an inverted pedestal placed upon an empty plinth in Trafalgar Square and the Holocaust Memorial in Vienna, an impenetrable library of books turned inwards in commemoration of the thousands of Austrian Jews who perished during World War II. Like her smaller sculptures, these monumental works are distinguished by their minimalist sensibility and their capacity to evoke stillness and contemplation.

Rachel Whiteread has a long list of international distinctions which include winning the 1993 Turner Prize for House, representing Great Britain in the 1997 Venice Biennale and presenting solo exhibitions at such prestigious institutions as the Kunsthalle Basel, the Reina Sofia, The Serpentine Gallery and the Deutsche Guggenheim. Her work is housed in museums and private collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Tate Modern, London and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. Glance at Dustin O’Halloran’s ever-increasing list of projects, and you could be forgiven for assuming that he’s something of a restless spirit. His life story does little to dispel the impression – it’s a litany of motion, of different homes in different continents, and sometimes hardly any home at all. But all this activity is deceptive; or, at least, it’s just surface detail. All the time, beneath the surface, there’s been a constant, stealthy, steady pulse – O’Halloran’s wistful and beautiful music. His compositions are languid and contemplative. The melodies are hestitant; plucked, slow-motion skeins of sound that fall languidly from solo piano or from naked acoustic guitar. And although they’re delicate – miniature marvels of nuance and balance – they carry an unfailing emotional charge. “Learning from art history and connecting to the major developments in modern painting is primary for me. I have come to appreciate the need for abstraction and how it invites the viewer to participate with the artist. This is truly wonderful. I feel that orchestrating compositions is the most important consideration in painting. A composition cannot succeed without genuine effort, sincerity and respect for the viewer. Blending intellect with intuition is absolutely fascinating because there are no formal considerations to follow other than knowledge and experience. The requirement and the pleasure of contemplation is most satisfying when searching for connections or symbols which we all share. My restricted palette allows me to concentrate on each composition’s overall sense of balance and design, providing a contemplative feel and consistency. The slightest mark has impact and must be well considered. Over time the feeling of things and how we interpret them has come to the forefront. I now ask myself, what is the prime of this composition or series, making my paintings about something, rather than of something, whether figurative or abstract.” Don Farrell
