“In 2010 I began to ride my congenital attraction for architecture: its huge volumes and gigantism, its shapes and textures… Fascinated by perspective I was taking photographs without fully understanding what my attention was being attracted too, what I was trying to represent with a shot and subsequent post-production. Photography was an opportunity to take a fragment of reality and give it a meaning, but also, conversely, as an expedient to let a significance take possession of reality to bring out himself. The contrast between these two visions became the source of my own reflections. Slowly I realized that psychology was an integral part of my creative experience. That I was not trying to represent architecture, but to use a photograph as way to strike and confuse my perceptive system. Therefore I started producing the first works that were later to be structured in the “Istigkeit” series…

While creating these images i realized that i was getting ever closer to the idea which was guiding me. Trying to invalidate the perceptual and cognitive mechanisms involved in the conceptualization of a given entity by our brains. At first sight each work in the “Istigkeit” series seems different from what it is; and what it is; is not always visible, or at least not clear and obvious. Volumes are artificially combined in the shadows and give rise to solids whose meticulous analysis reveals their illusory value. You follow a surface which then splits. You focus on walls and windows, but these interact and merge into conflicting objects and paradoxical perspectives. The sight is lost in the complexity of textures, intersections and overlays. Nothing is what it is and everything is what it seems. And sometimes, during the perception of what it seems, inside the mental mechanisms that lead to the interpretation of any given scenario, it’s possible your Ego cannot impose itself on a more primitive interpretation, rooted both in individual, collective, cultural and archetypal symbolic components…” ~ Mattia Mognetti

Azurebumble : ‘AI : Series’ (Photography Book)

Recently, I’ve curated a number of image series by photographers from ‘Flickr’ on my blog ‘Aesthetic Investigations’. Subsequently, I thought it would be interesting to document these works in a book. Therefore, i’ve arranged a collection of ’39’ abstract and minimal photographic series by these ’32’ artists. “My field of action is architectural space and everything that constitutes such space These spaces are and remain the original media for my painting. I work “on site” each time in a different space and my work develops itself in relation to the spaces I encounter. I generally roam through the space noting its architecture, materials, history and function. From these spatial data and in reference to the last piece I produced, I designate a specific vantage point for viewing from which my intervention takes shape.

The vantage point is carefully chosen: it is generally situated at my eye level and located preferably along an inevitable route, for instance an aperture between one room and another, a landing… I do not, however, make a rule out of this, for all spaces do not systematically possess an evident line. It is often an arbitrary choice. The vantage point will function as a reading point, that is to say, as a potential starting point to approaching painting and space.

The painted form achieves its coherence when the viewer stands at the vantage point.When he moves out of it, the work meets with space generating infinite vantage points on the form. It is not therefore through this original vantage point that I see the work achieved; it takes place in the set of vantage points the viewer can have on it. If I establish a particular relation to architectural features that influence the installation shape, my work still preserves its independence whatever architectural spaces I encounter. I start from an actual situation to construct my painting. Reality is never altered, erased or modified, it interests and seduces me in its complexity. I work “here and now”. – Felice Varini

“Movement is the central means of expression in my work. The changing structures that appear move in the transitional area between chaos and order, between variability and uniformity, between volatility and consistency. As a reconciliation of opposites.

My kinetic objects are characterised by a serial use of elements of which the form is generally of less importance than the movement that they make. Identical elements with identical movement options together form constantly changing structures. Like dancers executing a complex choreography. The forms that I use only function as the instruments to make the movement visible and, therefore, these are as simple as possible. The coordinated movement creates complexity.

The movements of the objects are usually controlled by an integrated computer system, which is not visible for the spectator. I make use of advanced technology, but this is not visible and it is only instrumental. Instrumental in an attempt to enable the constant movement in which structures appear and then disappear again in order to visualise the passage of time.” Willem van Weeghel
