Azurebumble : ‘AI : Series’ (Photography Book)

::

::

Recently, I’ve curated a number of image series by photographers from ‘Flickr’ on my blog ‘Aesthetic Investigations’. Subsequently, I thought it would be interesting to document these works in a book. Therefore, i’ve arranged a collection of ’39’ abstract and minimal photographic series by these ’32’ artists. A selection of pages from the book can be viewed below, a full book preview can be seen: HERE

Thank you to everyone who contributed their images to this project.

What is it within the life-less fragments of our physical environment that either stirs our psyche or leaves us indifferent? Is it the underlying patterns of geometric lines and forms as Kandinsky’s theories might suggest? Or is it the angle of fleeting light falling upon surfaces? Alternatively, is it simply whether or not objects and textures depicted manage to catalyse in us significant memories, however sub-conscious? It is these questions which led the photographer to hone in on the layered in-between worlds that materials such as fencing and glass often provide and, in doing so, explore the degree to which ‘straight’ photography may be able to reveal or metamorphose any of their evocative powers.

‘Thresholds’ contains ’38’ photographs chosen from several projects all of which involve glass. Although many months have passed since their beginnings, answers to these questions continue to elude her.

For anyone not familiar with this project here is the text that accompanied the original book release:

::

This book is the result of an online collaboration between 111 international artists and photographers, where by simply utilising the infrastructure of the photo sharing website ‘flickr’ we have managed to communicate, interact and gather together a stunning collection of over 400 abstract and aesthetic photographic works!

For this project I have reorganised a series of virtual online curations toward interconnected progressions of sensual, thought provoking and emotive works. Selected carefully each double-page spread features a self-contained visual duet…these pairings are also integral to the flow of the sequence as a whole. This continuity allows the viewer to visit any page at will and embark on an intriguing journey into a complex and ethereal world of delicate changing moods.

A space involving unexpected movements of colour, shape and form, minimal tonal progressions with gentle transitions from dark to light and warm to cool, subtle textural, linear and conceptual relationships and occasional mysterious figurative apparitions. Ultimately inviting emotional responses via the poetic adventures of the imagination and the senses. (azurebumble)

Monika Grzymala (Zabrze, Poland) creates temporary interventions in space, which—closely responding to the site at which they are produced—turn the line into a three-dimensional drawing. Her works are based on the fundamental examination of drawing as a medium as well as the medium of paper. In order to be able to translate the line into sculpture, the artist appropriated the Washi technique of making paper by hand. The drawing in these new works is the relief-like, heavily textured paper itself.

The sculptural drawing the installation artist has made for the Collector’s Edition is, next to the photographs, objects, and paintings in our program, a special object. The delicate work on paper is made of bast bark from the Asian mulberry tree, so-called kozo, and of abaca, the fibre a tropical banana plant. Crossing lines accentuate the organic structure of the natural white rag paper, and, like a sublime relief, span a space that is open to all sides and goes beyond the edge of the image following five different principles of image. At the same time each these meticulously executed, handmade pieces rests harmoniously inside the closed form of the square format. [Hatje Cantz]

AZUREBUMBLE : FRAGMENTAL (BOOK)

::

Back/Front Cover

::

“Fragmental” consists of ‘six’ series of digital artworks, each having evolved from small sections cut from photographs. A process where these basic elements have been combined and recombined numerous times to produce an extensive vocabulary of shapes and forms. With no preconceived ideas, I begin to play and improvise with these pieces allowing my imagination to create compositions, perhaps based on a simple pattern, an interesting association or architectural element, or maybe they’ll suggest some surreal narrative. These constructions can then form the basis for a continuation of this process, whereby selecting the most interesting aspects of these new images and placing them into the original pool, can create possibilities for fresh combinations and different ideas. This continual process of deconstruction and reconstruction also makes it possible to trace the evolution of specific elements throughout a number of incarnations and series. Despite the multiple choices this technique allows, I think it’s also important to introduce source material from outside the pool. Lately, using a similar process, I have been ‘remixing’ works by another photographer (Fernandoprats) and ‘refurbishing’ and ‘reimagining’ an old photograph by Andreas Feininger. In time, certain aspects of these series could possibly be integrated with earlier works to produce new and interesting hybrids.
