Ryoji Ikeda : ‘data.anatomy [civic]’ – (Audiovisual Installation)

::

::

‘data.anatomy [civic]’ is a new audiovisual installation by Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda, arising from a unique collaboration with Mitsuru Kariya, the development leader of the new Honda Civic car. Exhibited as a 3-screen video projection, the work immerses the viewer in an intricate yet vast audiovisual composition derived from the entire data set of the car. ~ [MUMA (Kraftwerk) Berlin on April 19th 2012]

Why do I make the art I make? What am I doing? What inspires me to do it? I don’t really ask myself those questions on a verbal level. I have been at work for so many years that I have answered these questions to my own satisfaction and I continue to answer them through the work that I produce. The problem is, the answer is completely embedded in the work itself, in the process, in the system, in the results. I had a teacher early on who told me that if a work of art needed to be explained with words then it wasn’t made correctly. A work of art has to stand on its own as the answer to any questions put to it. The answers are embedded in the physical fabric of its construction and if the answers are not found there then the wrong questions are being asked of it. Nothing is unimportant. There is no place without history, where you can just do what
you want. Every place speaks in a unique way. It needs to communicate a certain way
and to appeal to people. Architecture is an art of communication – not with words, but
with proportions and with an aura. Every building must tell a story. – Daniel Libeskind.

Paul Klee said “a line is a dot that went for a walk”. And one day – while out walking in Valencia, Berlin and Zurich – the line came across shadow, sky and negative space. These photographs explore the relationship between the four and were inspired directly by the work and friendship of: Gianni Galassi.
